On November 29, 2017, 40 Yard Bin played on a loop during business hours inside the Fine Arts building at the University of Victoria. Participants were invited to sit and watch a video of burning garbage. Comments and sketches were left inside a booklet entitled “Hello person sitting beside me.”
The Birth and Death of the Self
In this series, the composition and decomposition of the self are examined. Participants were invited to write down on a blank sheet of paper words that are associated with their identity. Each participant was then photographed holding up the sheet of paper. Following this excercise, an attempt to remove these words was undertaken by the artist. This series references Gillian Wearing’s work Signs That Say What You Want Them to Say and Not Signs That Say What Someone Else Wants You to Say.
you/me explores the relationship between the self and another.
Family Portrait questions how we construct our sense of belonging through intimate relationships.
Decomposition investigates the interrelated and impermanent nature of living organisms.
